Cleaning house physically, emotionally, and mentally.

I am participating in the A-to-Z Challenge again this year. My theme is My Favorite Books. Most of the books I will be posting about, I have read more than once. After all, they are my favorites.

Y is for The Year of Magical Thinking by Joan Didion.

This memoir, published in 2005, is a heartfelt rendering of Joan Didion’s life for the year after the unexpected death of her husband, John Gregory Dunne. It is impossible to read without feeling something.

Joan Didion writes about her raw experiences with each stage of grief. During the time of her husband’s death, her only child was also extremely ill. Thus double emotions going in Didion’s life.

The honesty of her writing is a heartbreaker, because while reading of her experience, I could see (and feel) my own–not the same experience, but somewhat similar. We will all go through death of a loved one. This book provides some realistic insight into the process.

Get out the tissues and read this magical book.
